Entry 6

Jaxon:
The theme in the Westing Game is information and how people interpret it. It is not just the mystery and how to solve it, but all the conflicts that are going on throughout the novel. Also, when money is involved how far are people willing to go in order to win it. Will people show their true identity or just do anything it takes to win.

Cameron:
The theme of East is that you dont know what to expect. When the bear came for Rose, it was almost a completely random event. Noone except Rose expected to see a white bear, and even Rose didnt even expect to be taken to the castle in the mountain. Another example is when Roses' sister got sick and when the farm lost its crop. The crop might have been from disease or bad weather but the illness was completely random.

Josh:
The theme in the book Code Talker is that you can do whatever you put your mind to. Early in the book, when Ned was in the school of Navajos, men from the military came there. He wanted to join the Marines after that, and wanted to serve his country. Ned eventually joined the Marines, and was sent to training with the Military. Ned became one of the code talkers for the U.S., and was serving his country in World War II.

David:
The theme of the book, The Hobbit, is no matter how small a person is, they can become a hero. A hobbit is a very small person, smaller that a dwarf. Bilbo is very timid and comfortable in his safe hobbit hole and for a hobbit to go on an adventure, it is found to be very disrespectful. When Gandalf tells Bilbo about the quest, he becomes cautious and frightened. As the adventure goes on Bilbo finds his inner strength to continue. As he gets out of his safety zone, Bilbo progress into a hero. Defeating a giant spider, escaping with Gollum's ring, and rescuing the dwarves.

Jaxon:
The climax in the novel The Westing Game is when Sandy McSouthers dies in front of the six heirs. Through Turtle Wexler and Judge Ford, the other heirs find out sandy was actually Sam Westing. Crow his ex wife, died of a heart attack, thus freeing Crow of any blame.
Cameron:
The Climax of the Christopher Killer is when Cameryn finds out that the killer of Rachel is the person she was gaining information from. Dr. Jewel. Dr. Jewel used his rental car in a different state to confirm where he was located, which put him away from the scene of the murder, but while Cameryn was searching his room, Dr. Jewel revealed on the phone that he created a plot to leave his rental car in a different state so that he was unable to be traced. While he was talking to the rental company, Cameryns' phone rang and she was revealed. Luckily help came in time before Dr. Jewel could kill her.

Josh:
In the book, Code Talker, the climax of the book is when the code talkers are finally put in a real war situation to test the skills they were trained for. Ned was sent in a landing boat to be put into battle for the first time at the Guadalcanal. Their mission was to storm and invade Blue Beach which was occupied by the Japanese. Unfortunately, there were too many casualties among the U.S. soldiers, despite the fact they did not even see a single Japanese soldier.

Jake:
The climax of the book night hoops is in the second to last basketball game when Nick About is playing point guard and he is teamed up with Trent Dawson, and they go on a scoring rampage and they totally crush the other team. After the game, everyone congratulated Trent, Nick, and they felt much better then everyone.

David:
The climax of the book, The Hobbit, is after Bard reviles that he has the Arkenstone. Thorin becomes frustrated with Bilbo when he sees that Bard has it. Bilbo explained that as his contract as the "Burglar," he gave the Lake Town people his part of the share. Thorin, forced into agreeing, offers to pay a fourteenth of the treasure to regain the Arkenstone. Secretly, Thorin is hoping that his army can make it down to the battlefield before they trade to capture the stone. The dwarf army reaches the camp and begin to threaten the elves and the men for the stone. Gandalf informs them that a new danger is coming. The Goblins and Wargs have found out about the treasure and intend to take it for themselves.

Entry 4

Josh:
In the book, Code Talker, the protagonists of the book would be the United States, including Ned, the Navajo Code Talkers, and the rest of the men in the military. The United States are fighting in World War II, and they have Navajo Code Talkers to help them, including Ned. The Japanese, the antagonists, are the people who would try to figure out what the U.S. was saying when the were sending messages in Navajo. Since the Japanese did not recognize the Navajo language, they had no idea what was being said by the U.S. military.

Cameron:
The protagonist of The Christopher Killer is a young girl named Rachel. Rachel is a good friend of Cameryn and a fellow worker at the grand hotel. But when Rachel is brutally murdered, she gives Cameryn hope that she can solve the killer. When Cameryn starts on her case and autopsy, she hits a dead end with the doctor and is kicked out of the room. So she turns to an alternative of going to Dr. Jewel

Jake:
The protagonist of Night Hoops is a the main character Nick Abbout. Nick loves to play basketball, and he has a court in his backyard. Even though the building of the court was one of the reasons his dad divorced his mom. Nick goes to join the high school basketball team, but he sees Trent Dawson there. Trent is the antagonist whose family doesnt care for him much, because he doesnt have a real father, his mom just has had lots of boyfriends. Trent is a mean kid who is in trouble with the law because of his brother Zach. Zach was a real bad guy he had always had a gun but no bullets and the one day he got some he accidently shot a kid. So the cops think that Trent was in on it but soon they will relize that Nick is taking the side of Trent.

David:
In the Book The Hobbit, the protagonist is Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo must help a company of dwarves (Thorin & Company) and a wizard named Gandolf defeat Smog (The antagonist). Smog is an evil dragon who destroyed the dwarves home and stole all there gold. Smog is big, evil, and a dragon while Bilbo is small, good, and a hobbit.

Jaxon:
In the book The Westing Games the protagonists are all six of the people who were asked to solve the mystery of who took Samuel Westing's life. These people are most aware of the truth and what is right. The antagonist is Samuel Westing who created his will as a game for selected people to solve his mystery and that will regulate who inherits his great fortune.

Entry 3

Cameron:
An example of foreshadowing is when the new deputy (Justin) confronts the main character (Cameryn). On her first case, Cameryn cannot control her emotions and in the middle of the analysis she runs out of the room behind the building. After her stomach is empty she is met by Justin, who gives her strange clues about a messenger and that often the messenger is killed...Later in the book Justin turns out to be a messenger from Cameryn's mom who abandoned her when she was just a child. Justin came to Cameryn with a note and a gift from Hannah Mahoney. She doesnt open the gift or the letter until the end of the book, and when she does she reveals the truth about why Hannah left.

Jake:
In the beginning of the book Night Hoops Nick was playing a basketball game with the worst kid in the town, Trent Dawson. He is a cheating little nasty kid, who has an even worse brother. I think this foreshadows the fact that in the book later on Trent and Nick become Friends and play together on a daily basis.

Jaxon:
In the beginning of the Westing Games, there is a selected group of people living in the Sunset Tower Apartments owned by the Westing Estate. This leads me to believe that the story is foreshadowing how one of the individuals living in Sunset Towers is going to inherit the 200 million dollar fortune and have the opportunity of moving into the Westing mansion.

David:
In the book, The Hobbit, Bilbo and the dwarfs (Thorin & Company) have to camp in a dark, creepy, and damp (from all the rain) place in the middle of nowhere. In the morning, the dwarfs see a light off in the distant. Due to the dark environment around them and the fact that Gandalf is missing, this may foreshadow that the light might be some evil things waiting for them.

Josh:
In the book, Code Talker, Ned and the group of Navajos were sent to a place in Hawaii to train with the other Marines during World War II. The Navajos were separated from the other Marines and taken to a secret room. In the room, there were Marines who made the Navajos translate their language to English. This may have foreshadowed what the Navajos' role might be during World War II, and that role was to provide a code for the US to send messages.

Grant:
In Peak, after Josh takes most of the climbers up to camp ABC and two of the campers get the illness HAPE, Peak starts having seconds thoughts about making it to the top when the climb up to ABC was hard and that is not even halfway. I think that this is foreshadowing that one of the climbers might not make it all the way to the top.

Entry 2

Cameron:

The Christopher Killer is set in a very small town of Silverton Colorado. The town consists of a few hundred people and it is one of those towns where everyone knows everyone. It is set in the Fall-Winter time period of the year. The town is very small but it has its own mountain range right next to it. The mountains kind of give a surreal feeling to the town and creates a mood that makes every one feel alone...which they kind of are because they are miles away from any other town.

Josh:
In the book Code Talker, the book is set during World War II, so the time period is between 1940 to 1945. The main character, a Navajo Indian named Ned, lived with his family. His uncle came to his home and sent Ned to a mission school with many other Navajo Indians. The impact from having all of the Navajo Indians sent to this mission school is that the children hated being there. A white man was in charge of the mission school and punished them if they spoke the Navajo language.

Jake:
In the book Night Hoops, the main story takes place mostly around Nick Abbot's school and his house. Nick Abbot is going out for the high school basketball team, with his friend. He plays point guard while his friend scores all of the points. But while they are trying out they realize that Trent Dawson is also trying out and soon all hell will break loose.

David:
The book, The Hobbit, begins in the home of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo lives in a house called a hobbit hole. His house is a long cylinder shape that runs into a hill. The front door is green with a golden knob and the door is perfectly round. The rooms on the left of the hobbit hole (as you go in) are the best rooms. They are the best rooms because they are the rooms with windows, letting in the sun light of a peaceful spring morning. The hobbit hole has bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, lots of pantries, wardrobes (there were whole rooms devoted to just clothes), kitchens, and dining rooms. All these rooms were just on one floor, no upstairs!

Grant:
The book, Peak, Peak starts off first climbing a skyscraper in New York. After getting caught he is then sent to China where everything is different from his other home. He then meets a young Tibetian boy named Sun-jo and a Tibet monk named Zola who is a good friend of Peak's dad and a climber. Peak also doesn't know yet that he has been selected to go summit Mt. Everest. Once at the Base Camp everything starts to change for Peak. He starts learning many things about the mountain and himself.
Jaxon:
The Westing Game takes place in the luxurious apartments on the shore of Lake Michigan. The Westing Manson is sitting on a hill looking over the city. The only buildings around are the Sunset Tower Apartments and the Westing home. All of the civilians who have received the mysterious letter are still in a surprise of what is going to come later down the road.

Entry 1

Josh:
In the book Code Talker, the main character, Ned, was taken away from his family as a little boy and was brought to a school for the Navajo Indians. At the school, he was forced not to speak his language, and a white man at the school would beat the children if they spoke Navajo. Also at the school, the white people who ran the school cut his hair and making him lose his respect and dignity as a Navajo Indian.
Jake:
So far in the book Night Hoops the main character is a basketball player who loves to play, but his Dad does not care much. This is so because his Dad wants his oldest son to play basketball because he did. However the older son doesnt want to, he just wants to practice his trumpet and join jazz band. So after building a basketball court in there backyard, its a fight between the youngest and oldest brother to see whose the best player.
David:
Bilbo Baggins, the main character of The Hobbit, is given a chance to go on an adventure. Although to hobbits, going on an adventure is very disrespectful. Gandalf, a wizard, continues to pester Bilbo on going. Finally, he excepts. Bilbo must now survive the adventure of a lifetime.
Cameron:
The book The Christopher Killer is a very exciting book that is full of mystery. Cameryn Mahoney is the main character who dreams to become a forensics scientist. Her first case is a good start for her, but when her next case is her best friend, she becomes determined to figure out her killer, and she will do everything in her power to help.
Jaxon:
In the Westing Game, six individuals are randomly selected to come together and live in the beautiful Sunset Tower apartments. Looking over the city is the very wealthy Samuel W. Westings' estate. Not a soul has been in the mansion for years. Until now. A few residents at the Sunset Tower apartments notice smoke coming out of the Westing’s home. No one dares enter the home because it is supposedly haunted. Rumor says Samuel Westing is lying dead in the middle of the home right now.
Grant:
In the book Peak, Peak Marcello is a 14 year old boy who loves to climb. His parents were professional rock climbers and very famous. After Peak was born, Peak's mother moved with Peak to New York but his dad stayed behind. Now Peak copes with his stress by sneaking out and climbing skyscrapers, but after Peak was caught climbing a tall building and sentenced to 3 years of jail his only way out was to go with his dad that he hasn't talked to in seven years and move to China.
